Depression

Depression is a condition that affects a large number of people. Some manage to live with it, believing it is just a 'bad day' or a 'phase'. Others may seek help from their GP or a counsellor. Unfortunately, depression can be a very serious illness, causing debilitation, agrophobia and even suicide.

But what is depression? Many people describe it as a 'black curtain of dispair'. They feel irritable, tired, lacking energy and this can be for no particular reason. This can become consistent and have a great effect upon their daily lives and relationships with others. They may be unable to sleep and find no enjoyment in any aspect of their life. The disorder can also have a great effect upon their concentration. A lot of people with the disorder can notice a complete personaility change.

Causes and cures for depression are unclear. A person could suffer with the condition due to a lack of seratonin (happy chemicals) in their brain. There could be aspects of their lives which they are finding difficult to cope with. They could be given counselling or anti depressants to assist with the management of the disorder but they also need to work very hard to fight the condition.

During my personal battle with depression, I was able to meet a great number of people who helped me, providing me with an empathetic ear and information on how to deal with the illness. Talk is a great therapy, particularly with those who have experienced depression at some point in their lives.
